How to make bone broth for dogs (and cats)
Beef bone broth for dogs recipe
You will need:
- Variety of raw bones – any bones you have left over from feeding or bones purchased from your local raw shop, butcher or supermarket (joint bones or marrow bones are great)
- Veggies – optional for flavour, vitamins and minerals (we used celery and carrots)
- 2 tbsp Verm-X Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
- Water to cover
- A slow cooker or oven proof pot
- A silicone mould tray for freezing
How do you make bone broth for dogs?
Place your bones into the slow cooker or pot. If adding veggies, you can pop them in at this stage.
Pour over cold water, just enough to cover all of the bones.
Add Organic Apple Cider Vinegar - the acidity breaks down the collagen and makes it more abundant in the broth - and simmer in the slow cooker on low for at least 24 hours.
If the water level gets low, add a little more.
The broth can be cooked for up to 48 hours and you can tell it's ready when all the meat has fallen from the bones.
Once ready, strain the liquid into a jug or bowl. We used a sieve to do this, making sure no bones remain in the liquid. Cooked bones can be extremely dangerous if dogs consume them, so ensure these are well out of reach. Dispose of the cooked bones and veggies safely.
Set the liquid aside to cool; the fat will rise to the top and you can scrape this off once set.
Frozen bone broth treats for dogs
You can then either store the bone broth in the fridge for up to five days or pour into silicone moulds or jars and freeze for up to six months.
Simply add the bone broth to the silicone the moulds and freeze for an easy, tasty frozen treat.
Not only is the broth a healthy, nutrient-dense food, it is also a great addition to raw or dry meals.
Bone broth for dogs benefits

The addition of our pure Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with The Mother is also used by many to aid in joint support and mobility in dogs. It also helps with the digestion and absorption of food and vital nutrients, whilst reducing the possible risk of harmful bacteria in the gut and strengthening the natural immune system.
